Lettuces
Varieties of lettuces
The current range of lettuce varieties is particularly extensive. Thanks to the red varieties color came into the range. Also in taste supply has expanded considerably.
There are about a hundred varieties, which are divided into four groups. There are lettuces, of which the round leaves overlap each other around a heart. Within this group, one distinguishes the soft species, such as the well-known butterhead lettuce and crispy varieties, such as the popular iceberg lettuce.
Another group are lettuces which also have a heart but elongated rather than round leaves. The best known variety in this group is the cos or romaine.
Finally, there is the group of the loose-leaf types. These lettuces do not have a heart, the leaves grow in the form of a wreath. They are also ‘cut-and-come-again’, because new leaves keep growing on.
